Our History

2006 marks Sharpe's Soil Services' 30th year in business

Blair Sharpe started his business in Moosomin in 1976 by offering liquid fertilizer, crop protection products, and custom application. The need developed for dry fertilizer therefore bagged product was brought in until a warehouse and blender were added to the site in 1980. Over the years, the custom application business has been accomplished by a variety of pieces of equipment and operators. Expansion has included a warehouse in 1994, along with a second level to the office, a volume metric blender, a scale, dry load out, and fertilizer storage in 1996.

In the late '70s and early '80s, to better service our customers we set up liquid fertilizer sites on some farms. These sites were established at Karl and Lynne Johnson's at Kelso, which remains in operation today, Keith and Bertha Lewis' at Wawota, and Keith and Darlene Lundgren's at Marchwell.

Sharpe's Langenburg branch started in 1986 with a small office, liquid tanks, and a garage for crop protection products. That site expanded in 1988 with an office, shop, and crop protection product warehouse facility. Dry fertilizer tanks were also added for customer convenience. In 1994 a 2500 sq. ft. addition was added to the warehouse and in 1998 more liquid fertilizer storage was added.

In 1987 we saw an opportunity to expand our geography and to add a new service. We purchased an NH3 and dry fertilizer site at Rocanville from Golden Acres and started to offer anhydrous ammonia to our customers. A warehouse was constructed in 1994 with a new office following in 1996. We came to the conclusion that we did not want the risk of anhydrous ammonia, so we closed the tank in 1998. That same year we expanded our liquid fertilizer facility with more storage and a 3" flow meter.

Sharpe's had another opportunity to expand in 1995, this time by purchasing Rainbow Soil Services in Stockholm. We saw the need for faster in season service with liquid fertilizer, so in 1998 we upgraded the load out system to a 3" flow meter. Then in 2002 we installed a 15 Mt vertical blender and more dry fertilizer storage was added.

In 1995 Blair Sharpe went looking for a partner that could aid Sharpe's in its continuous growth towards the future. On December 31, 1995 Sharpe's Soil Services Ltd. entered into a joint venture with Agrico Canada Ltd. Agrico has many successful joint ventures with agricultural input retailers and has distribution facilities for liquid and dry fertilizer in strategic points throughout Canada.

In 2000 we purchased Cam Fletts crop protection product and custom application business in Angusville, MB. Since then we have expanded the business and now offer seed, liquid fertilizer, and dry fertilizer.

Cargill shut down their Wapella elevator in 2001, so we purchased the farm supply site to serve our existing customers and to expand in the area. At that site we offer crop protection products, seed, liquid fertilizer, and dry fertilizer.

We are proud to say Sharpe's started with one small site in Moosomin and over 30 years has expanded to the six branches it has today.
